Namibia awards 20 MW Naruchas solar project to JCM Power consortium
Namibia has awarded the contract for the 20 MW Naruchas solar project to a consortium led by Canada-based JCM Power. The consortium also includes Broadreach Energy, Galen Group Investment, and Southern Africa Group.
The project is part of a larger 120 MW solar program initiated by the national utility NamPower, which aims to develop six 20 MW plants through independent power producers. This initiative is designed to bolster domestic renewable energy capacity and decrease the nation's heavy reliance on electricity imports.
Data from the Namibia Statistics Agency indicates that in August 2026, electricity imports accounted for 65% of the country's power supply, while domestic production provided only 35%. The Naruchas project complements existing domestic investments, such as the 100 MW Sores |Gaib and 80 MW Omburu II solar plants.
