Namibia renewable energy development

Overview

Namibia is working to expand its domestic renewable energy capacity to reduce a heavy reliance on electricity imports, which accounted for 65% of the country’s power supply in August 2026.

Efforts to manage this transition include addressing regulatory gaps in the fast-growing distributed rooftop solar market. The Renewable Energy Industry Association of Namibia (REIAoN) has formed working groups to establish professional installation standards and develop net metering mechanisms, which would allow consumers to feed excess power back into the public grid.

Simultaneously, the national utility NamPower is advancing a 120 MW solar program through independent power producers. As part of this initiative, a contract for the 20 MW Naruchas solar project was awarded to a consortium led by JCM Power. This project joins other domestic investments, such as the Sores |Gaib and Omburu II solar plants, to bolster the national grid.
