Namibia launches Africa’s first integrated green hydrogen hub

Namibia has launched the CMB. TECH facility in Walvis Bay, marking the continent’s first fully integrated green hydrogen hub. The facility combines solar power generation, green hydrogen production, and energy storage into a single operational ecosystem designed to support industrial decarbonisation.

Utilizing Namibia’s abundant solar resources, the plant uses an electrolyser to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen will initially be used for local industrial applications, including generators, dual-fuel trucks, and the country’s first hydrogen-powered freight locomotive.

Future expansions aim to integrate the plant with port infrastructure to produce ammonia from green hydrogen. This development is intended to facilitate maritime decarbonisation by providing a renewable fuel source for ships, reducing reliance on fossil fuels in the shipping sector. Siemens serves as the technology partner, providing the electrical, automation, and safety infrastructure for the site.
