Nampula healthcare workers detained for suspected corruption

Authorities in Nampula, Mozambique, have detained several healthcare workers on suspicion of corruption and bribery.

A technician from the Nampula Central Hospital blood bank was arrested after allegedly accepting 3,000 meticais to facilitate the acquisition of three units of blood for an inpatient. The arrest followed a report made to the Nampula Provincial Anti-Corruption Office on August 4. Investigators reportedly located the technician at the hospital, where he confirmed receiving the payment.

In a separate incident in the same city, two laboratory technicians from the 25 de Setembro Health Center were also detained. The pair is accused of demanding payment to facilitate medical examinations for a citizen's wife. While they initially requested 3,000 meticais, the amount was reportedly reduced to 1,000 meticais. Investigators witnessed the transaction and subsequently arrested the employees, seizing their mobile phones for further analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.
