Corruption and theft in Mozambique healthcare

In Maputo, the Central Hospital (HCM) reported a 79.4% reduction in the theft of hospital goods and consumables over a three-month period, lowering financial losses from approximately 1.79 million Meticais to 365,320 Meticais. Following a case where a road accident victim died after public servants demanded a bribe before performing urgent surgery, a court sentenced two individuals to seven years in prison for passive corruption and two others to two years for involuntary manslaughter. The convicted individuals were also ordered to be expelled from state service.
