Nampula province faces measles outbreak and malnutrition crisis

The Nampula province in Mozambique is facing significant public health challenges, including a measles outbreak and high rates of child mortality due to chronic malnutrition.

Health authorities reported 984 accumulated cases of measles between March 20 and August 24, 2026, resulting in three deaths. The highest concentration of cases is in the Nampula district, followed by Malema, Nacala-Porto, and Nacarôa. Health officials have recommended increased vaccination for children and improved hygiene measures to curb the spread.

Separately, chronic malnutrition has caused the deaths of 21 children in the province in recent months. The deaths are linked to limited access to nutritious food driven by socioeconomic and climatic factors. Local authorities and international partners are working to implement nutrition programs and food security strategies to address the crisis.
