Measles outbreak and malnutrition in Mozambique

Overview

In the Nampula province of Mozambique, health officials reported a significant malaria burden during the first half of 2026, with 796,422 cases and 47 deaths. While these malaria figures represented a decrease from the 1.8 million cases and 61 deaths recorded during the same period in 2025, the region simultaneously faced a measles outbreak affecting eight districts.

By mid-August, the measles outbreak in Mozambique had escalated. Since the outbreak was declared in July 2025, the National Directorate of Public Health reported 2,595 cases and four deaths. Nampula province remains the most heavily impacted area, followed by the Sofala and Zambézia provinces.

As of late August 2026, updated figures for the Nampula province indicate 984 accumulated measles cases between March 20 and August 24, resulting in three deaths. The highest concentration of these cases is located in the Nampula district, followed by Malema, Nacala-Porto, and Nacarôa. Health officials have recommended increased vaccination for children and improved hygiene measures to curb the spread.

In addition to the measles outbreak, Nampula is facing a malnutrition crisis. Chronic malnutrition has caused the deaths of 21 children in the province in recent months, driven by limited access to nutritious food due to socioeconomic and climatic factors. Local authorities and international partners are working to implement nutrition programs and food security strategies to address the crisis.
