Namur extends outdoor fire bans due to drought risks

Authorities in the Province of Namur have extended a drought-related police order until September 1 due to persistent fire risks and water deficits. Governor Denis Mathen decided on the extension following warnings that recent or forecasted rainfall will not sufficiently compensate for the accumulated water deficit.

The order prohibits all outdoor fires in forests, fields, meadows, and gardens, and bans barbecues in public spaces, including designated areas. Youth movements are also prohibited from lighting campfires. While private barbecues remain permitted, residents must ensure they are located a sufficient distance from dry vegetation or combustible materials and have appropriate extinguishing equipment immediately available.

In France, heightened vigilance regarding garden fires is also noted. While private barbecues are generally permitted nationally, the burning of green waste—such as branches, leaves, or grass clippings—is prohibited across the country, with potential fines of up to 750 euros. Authorities emphasize that human actions, including improperly placed barbecues or discarded cigarette butts, are responsible for a significant portion of forest fires.
