Nana Adutwum proposes private funding for Accra-Kumasi Expressway

Dr. Nana Yaw Adutwum, Director of Policy for the United Party (UP), has urged the Ghanaian government to utilize private sector investment for the proposed $2 billion Accra-Kumasi Expressway. He argued that the current plan to ring-fence public funds for the project prevents the government from addressing urgent national commitments, specifically the unpaid arrears owed to teachers.

Adutwum noted that while the expressway is a commendable infrastructure project, the financing model should be adjusted to allow for the reallocation of resources. He specifically highlighted the need to pay teachers their promotion arrears and deprived area allowances.

The proposal follows industrial action by three major teacher unions—the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG), and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT). While these unions recently suspended their strike after meeting with the Council of State, the issue of outstanding entitlements remains a critical concern.
