Nantes expands food security initiative using local currency

In Nantes, the common food fund initiative is showing progress following its launch in the summer of 2025. The program, introduced by Mayor Johanna Rolland, aims to make healthy nutrition more accessible to all residents.

Currently, 71 households are participating in the experimental phase, nearing the initial target of 80. Participants use the local currency, the Moneko, to purchase vegetable baskets at local grocery stores such as the Comptoir des alouettes in Chantenay. The initiative has also gained political traction, with the re-elected candidate proposing to expand this food social security model to triple the number of beneficiaries.
