Campi Flegrei 4.7‑Magnitude Earthquake Injures Dozens Near Naples FAST-MOVING
A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck the Campi Flegrei volcanic area west of Naples on 31 July 2026 at 19:46 local time. The quake’s epicentre was near Pozzuoli, about three kilometres deep, making it the strongest tremor recorded in the region in the past 40 years.
Authorities reported at least 21 people injured, two of them in critical condition, while other reports mentioned 8‑10 injured. No fatalities were confirmed and no large‑scale rescue operations were requested. The shaking caused minor structural damage, including the collapse of a façade in Pozzuoli and falling tuff blocks that damaged vehicles. Power outages affected roughly 100 000 customers, and rail, metro and the port of Pozzuoli were temporarily suspended for safety checks.
A swarm of aftershocks followed, with about 60 tremors recorded; the strongest aftershock reached magnitude 3.1. Emergency services, the civil‑protection crisis unit, the prefect of Naples, the regional president and the mayor of Pozzuoli coordinated evacuations of around 22 families and set up temporary shelters. Monitoring of the seismically active caldera continues.
