Naples introduces first new Circumvesuviana train amid summer metro service cuts

The Naples public‑transport system is undergoing major summer upgrades. From 1 August to 4 September, night extensions on Metro Line 1 are suspended, and Line 2 sees station closures for modernization, including Napoli Montesanto from mid‑August. Line 6 operates only in the morning (7:10 – 14:50) between 10 August and 23 August, with other routes running reduced schedules. The works, funded by PNRR money, also affect the Circumvesuviana network.

On the Circumvesuviana, the first new Stadler train (type Etr301) entered service on the Volla‑Baiano segment, offering four daily trips. This marks the start of a planned renewal of the rolling stock, with 56 new units slated for delivery by the end of 2027. The new train is about 40.88 m longer than earlier models, raising platform‑length concerns, and only three to four drivers are currently certified to operate it, prompting calls for additional training. The launch was overseen by EAV and highlighted by officials such as Pietro Diamantini and the Infrastructure, Mobility and Civil Protection Commission chaired by Aniello Esposito.
