Naples taxi drivers and Italian seasonal labor face instability

In Naples, the Comitato Tassisti di Base has criticized the municipal administration, labeling its claims of a successful tourist Ferragosto period as ‘political propaganda.’ The committee argues that taxi drivers are facing low demand, with many vehicles remaining idle for hours. They also questioned the management of taxi licenses and city mobility, noting that numerous construction sites are hindering traffic and impacting tourism.

Broadly across Italy, seasonal employment trends reveal growing economic instability. While official employment figures show record numbers, the quality of work in the tourism and service sectors is declining. Over 80% of new summer contracts are temporary or on-call, and involuntary part-time work affects 57% of part-time employees. Furthermore, the risk of poverty for those on temporary contracts exceeds 19%, and Inail inspections found irregularities in nearly 70% of verified summer structures, including unregistered hours and off-the-books payments.
