BRICS Summit in New Delhi convenes 11 nations amid global tensions

The 18th BRICS Summit is convening in New Delhi, bringing together leaders from 11 member nations, including Russia, China, Iran, and South Africa. The summit, held under the theme ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,’ arrives amid significant geopolitical tensions, including the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has used the forum to issue warnings to Europe, stating that any deployment of European troops to Ukraine would be interpreted as a direct war with Russia. Putin also denied that Russia poses a threat to European nations, accusing Western elites of creating imaginary threats to frighten their populations.

On the bilateral front, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to hold high-level meetings with Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The latter’s visit marks his first trip to India since 2019, signaling a potential, though cautious, normalization of relations between the two powers. Additionally, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia has proposed a special mechanism with Russia to accelerate the implementation of bilateral agreements.

Economic discussions are central to the summit, with focus on expanding intra-BRICS trade, which reached $1.17 trillion in 2024. Discussions include the potential use of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) to enhance trade settlement efficiency and the goal of increasing bilateral trade between Russia and India to $100 billion by 2030.
