AustralianSuper adds AU$500 million to India's NIIF as PM Modi visits Australia

AustralianSuper, Australia's largest pension fund, announced an additional AU$500 million investment in India's National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF), raising its total Indian exposure to AU$3.3 billion. The fresh commitment builds on an earlier AU$240 million stake made in 2019 and reflects confidence in India's long‑duration infrastructure pipeline.

The announcement was made on the sidelines of the Australia‑India Annual Leaders' Summit in Melbourne, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and addressed the Indian diaspora. Both Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman thanked AustralianSuper, with Sitharaman posting on X, "Thank you @PMOIndia for championing greater investments in India and strengthening the #NIIF," and Modi stating, "India welcomes the AU$500 million investment from AustralianSuper… this is yet another glimpse of the global confidence in India's growth and reform trajectory."

AustralianSuper CEO Paul Schroder and CIO Shaun Manuell highlighted India's stable policy environment and the attractive returns from long‑term infrastructure assets. The NIIF, created in 2015, aims to channel global capital into Indian infrastructure projects. The visit also covered broader agenda items such as uranium trade, defence cooperation and strategic partnership between the two countries.
