Narendra Modi's Australia visit to launch BBL match in Chennai and seek uranium supplies

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Australia in early July 2026 for high‑level talks with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Sydney and Melbourne. During the visit he is slated to formally unveil Cricket Australia’s plan to stage the opening match of the 2026‑27 Big Bash League season at Chennai’s M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, a move aimed at expanding the league’s global viewership and deepening Indo‑Australian sporting ties.

At the same time, Modi will pursue a boost in Australian uranium exports to fuel India’s expanding civilian nuclear programme, which is needed to meet the power demand of a rapidly growing data‑centre sector. India plans to add 18 new reactors by 2032, and officials hope to increase uranium shipments beyond the symbolic deliveries made since the 2014 bilateral agreement. Discussions will also cover broader defence cooperation within the Quad framework, as both countries look to counter China’s influence in the Indo‑Pacific.
