NASA advances lunar navigation with CAPSTONE 02 mission
NASA is preparing the CAPSTONE 02 mission, slated for launch in 2027, to demonstrate autonomous navigation, rendezvous, and cislunar communications for future Artemis lunar operations. The demonstration will deploy two 400‑kg spacecraft built by Terran Orbital Systems into a near‑rectilinear halo orbit, where they will conduct formation‑flying and proximity‑operations exercises that are more complex than low‑Earth‑orbit maneuvers.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency’s goal of landing astronauts on the Moon in late 2028 relies heavily on SpaceX’s engineering talent and financial strength, stating, “We can’t do it without them.” He linked the 2028 timeline directly to SpaceX’s readiness and highlighted the private firm’s role in emerging technologies such as orbital data‑centers that could support future deep‑space missions.
