NASA Confirms Super El Niño Development

NASA, using data from the Sentinel‑6 Michael Freilich satellite, reported elevated sea‑level heights in the equatorial Pacific, confirming that a strong El Niño has entered its mature phase and may evolve into a "Super El Niño." The observations show large Kelvin waves of warm water moving eastward, a key precursor to the phenomenon. NOAA had earlier issued an official El Niño advisory.

Scientists warn that the event could raise temperatures well above normal across most of the globe. Regions expected to experience extreme heat include North America, Central America, the Caribbean, Europe, North Africa and large parts of Asia. Drier conditions are forecast for Indonesia, Australia and other western Pacific nations, while heavier rainfall is likely in the southwestern United States and parts of South America. The intensified sea‑surface warmth may also boost tropical cyclone activity in the Pacific and affect Atlantic storm development.

NASA officials stress the need for continued monitoring, noting that while the current signals resemble the strong 1997 event, final intensity remains uncertain.
