NASA extends Voyager 2 mission life through power management

NASA engineers have successfully extended the operational life of the Voyager 2 spacecraft through a strategic power management maneuver known as the “Big Bang.” Located over 20 billion kilometers from Earth, the probe relies on a radioisotope thermoelectric generator that loses approximately 4 watts of power annually.

To prevent the loss of scientific instruments, engineers from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory performed a precise operation in July 2026. The maneuver involved simultaneously deactivating an old tape recorder and two heaters, while activating two different heaters and a propulsion device. This reconfiguration has successfully reduced energy consumption, potentially extending the mission by one to two years.

Voyager 2, launched in 1977, remains the only spacecraft to have visited all four giant planets in our solar system. It is currently exploring interstellar space, providing unique data on magnetic fields and cosmic environments that no other active NASA mission can directly access.
