Overview

NASA engineers have successfully extended the operational life of the Voyager 2 spacecraft through a power management maneuver known as the ‘Big Bang’. The 49-year-old probe, currently exploring interstellar space, faces annual power losses of approximately 4 watts due to the decay of its radioisotope thermoelectric generators.

To address this, engineers from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory performed a reconfiguration in July 2026. This involved the simultaneous deactivation of an old tape recorder and two heaters, while activating two different heaters and a propulsion device. This specific simultaneous approach was necessary to maintain internal thermal levels and prevent propellant lines from freezing, a problem encountered during previous sequential shutdown attempts. This maneuver is expected to extend the mission by at least one to two years, preventing a planned shutdown that was originally scheduled for late 2026.

Despite these efforts, NASA faces ongoing technical challenges in maintaining both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. Engineers must manage dwindling power from plutonium batteries while mitigating the risk of clogged hydrazine fuel lines, which are essential for orienting the probes' antennas toward Earth.

As of August 2026, Voyager 2 is approximately 21.4 billion kilometers from Earth, while Voyager 1 remains the most distant object at roughly 25.6 billion kilometers. The Deep Space Network (DSN) continues to face operational strain, with demand exceeding supply by roughly 40 percent, a situation worsened by the indefinite offline status of the 70-meter dish at Goldstone following damage in September 2025.
