NASA extends Voyager 2 mission life via Big Bang maneuver
NASA engineers have successfully extended the operational life of the Voyager 2 spacecraft through a technical maneuver known as the ‘Big Bang’. Located approximately 13.3 billion miles from Earth, the 49-year-old probe relies on radioisotope thermoelectric generators that lose roughly 4 watts of power annually due to plutonium decay.
The ‘Big Bang’ approach involved the simultaneous powering off of certain devices and replacing them with less resource-intensive alternatives. This simultaneous switch was critical to maintaining internal thermal levels; previous attempts to shut down systems sequentially failed to provide enough heat to prevent propellant lines from freezing.
This maneuver allows the three remaining active scientific instruments on Voyager 2 to continue operating for at least another year, preventing a planned shutdown scheduled for late 2026. NASA plans to attempt a similar energy-saving reconfiguration on Voyager 1 in the coming months to maximize the longevity of both historic explorers.
