NASA honeybee experiment in 1984 shows hive construction in microgravity

In April 1984, during the STS-41C mission, NASA conducted an experiment to determine if honeybees could build a hive and maintain their characteristic hexagonal structure in microgravity. The experiment, proposed by student Dan Poskevich, involved a colony consisting of one queen and 3,301 worker bees housed in a specially designed module aboard the Challenger.

Initial observations showed the bees struggled to adapt to the lack of gravity, frequently colliding with the walls of their enclosure because they could not distinguish up from down. However, as the mission progressed, the bees adapted their flight patterns. By the end of the seven-day mission, the colony had constructed approximately 200 square centimeters of honeycomb.

Researchers noted that while the bees successfully built the structure, the microgravity environment resulted in subtle physical differences compared to Earth-based control groups. Specifically, the hexagonal cells built in space featured smaller diameters and thicker walls, though the depths remained within normal parameters.
