NASA honeybee microgravity experiment

Overview

In April 1984, during the STS-41C mission, NASA conducted an experiment aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger to observe how honeybees would adapt to microgravity. The study involved a colony of approximately 3,300 bees, including one queen, housed in a specialized Bee Enclosure Module.

While the bees initially struggled to navigate and frequently collided with enclosure walls due to the inability to distinguish up from down, they eventually adapted their flight patterns. By the conclusion of the seven-day mission, the colony successfully constructed roughly 200 square centimeters of honeycomb.

Researchers observed that the microgravity environment caused physical variations in the hive structure compared to Earth-based models. The resulting honeycomb cells featured smaller diameters and thicker walls, although the depths of the cells remained within normal parameters. The queen bee survived the mission and laid 35 eggs.
