NASA invests $600 million in commercial lunar landers to advance Moon Base plan

NASA announced the award of nearly $600 million in contracts to commercial partners Astrobotic, Firefly Aerospace and Intuitive Machines under its Commercial Lunar Payload Services program. The contracts fund four robotic missions that will deliver scientific instruments and payloads to the Moon’s South Pole, a site chosen for its water‑ice deposits that could support future human habitation.

The agency’s Phase I Moon Base architecture, running through 2029, calls for more than 20 robotic landings to test technologies, map the environment and begin assembling infrastructure. Payloads include cameras to study dust, laser retro‑reflector arrays for navigation and a spectrometer to measure radiation. Companies such as Blue Origin are also progressing with their own lander development, completing environmental testing and integration milestones ahead of scheduled launches.
