Artemis program: crew flights, contracts, lunar base, IV lag
Entities: Orion spacecraft · Christina Koch · NASA · Space Launch System · Reid Wiseman
Overview
NASA’s Artemis II mission launched on 1 April 2026, carrying commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialists Christina Koch and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The crew completed a ten‑day lunar‑flyby, set a new human‑space distance record of ≈ 406 000 km, recorded an “Earthset” video from lunar orbit, and tested the Orion Optical Communications System, which transmitted high‑definition data via infrared laser. After a 40‑minute communications blackout behind the Moon, contact was restored and the crew splashed down in the Pacific on 10 April. The flight was celebrated in the United States and Canada, including a White House reception that mixed political commentary with the mission’s scientific achievements.
In June 2026 NASA announced the Artemis III crew: commander Randy Bresnik, ESA pilot Luca Parmitano (the first European astronaut on an Artemis flight), and mission specialists Andre Douglas and Frank Rubio, with Bob Hines as backup. The mission was re‑purposed from a lunar landing to a two‑week low‑Earth‑orbit test of Orion’s docking, life‑support and communications with prototype lunar landers from SpaceX’s Starship and Blue Origin’s Blue Moon. The all‑male roster sparked public criticism for lacking gender diversity.
NASA also confirmed a schedule shift: Artemis IV will carry the first crewed Moon landing, now targeted for 2028, preserving a two‑year lead over China’s 2029‑30 window. The agency’s Announcement of Collaboration Opportunity selected 41 technology proposals from 37 U.S. firms, and awarded $590 million to Astrobotic, Firefly Aerospace and Intuitive Machines for four uncrewed lander missions supporting the $30 billion Moon‑Base program. Parallel private‑sector updates detailed new lander strategies—Starship‑first launch‑vehicle integration and Blue Moon’s modular redesign—aimed at keeping the overall Artemis timeline on track.
