NASA Perseverance rover sets distance record on Mars
NASA’s Perseverance rover has officially become the vehicle with the most distance traveled on another world. On October 11, the rover’s odometer reached 45.22 kilometers, narrowly surpassing the 45.16 kilometers recorded by the Opportunity rover during its mission between 2004 and 2018.
A significant factor in this achievement is the rover’s advanced autonomous navigation system, known as AutoNav. While previous rovers like Spirit and Opportunity relied heavily on Earth-based routing, more than 90% of Perseverance’s journey has been completed using its ability to “think while driving.” The system processes hundreds of thousands of data points to map terrain and avoid hazards in real-time, allowing it to cover up to 412 meters in a single Martian day.
Perseverance is currently exploring the Jezero Crater, specifically moving toward an area called “Idubi.” Scientists are examining ancient rocks in this region that may be over 4 billion years old, searching for potential signs of primitive life and evidence of ancient hydrothermal systems.
