NASA Perseverance rover Mars mission milestones

Overview

NASA’s Perseverance rover has set a new record for the longest distance traveled by a vehicle on another celestial body. On October 11, 2026, the rover reached a cumulative distance of 45.22 kilometers (28.1 miles) on Mars, surpassing the previous record of 45.16 kilometers held by the Opportunity rover.

This achievement was facilitated by the rover’s advanced AutoNav system, which allows it to drive autonomously approximately 90% of the time by analyzing terrain in real time. Technical updates, including revised braking software and increased tilt allowances, have further supported these long-distance journeys.

Currently, the rover is exploring the Jezero Crater and moving toward an area known as ‘Idubi’ to examine ancient rocks that may provide evidence of primitive life or ancient hydrothermal systems.
