Blue Origin wins $700M NASA contract for Mars communications network

NASA has awarded Blue Origin a contract worth up to $700 million to develop the Mars Telecommunications Network (MTN). The project involves designing, developing, launching, and operating a high-performance communications orbiter to serve as a critical relay link between Earth and future missions on Mars.

Based on the Blue Ring platform, the spacecraft is intended to provide high-bandwidth data transmission, navigation services, and imagery for both robotic and future human exploration. The orbiter is scheduled for delivery to NASA by December 31, 2028. This infrastructure is seen as essential to support the increasing complexity of Mars missions as existing relay assets age.

The initiative aims to ensure reliable connectivity for surface assets, such as rovers, by providing a dedicated system that does not have to split resources between scientific investigation and communication duties. Production for the project is reportedly underway at Blue Origin’s facility in Huntsville, Alabama.
