NASA struggles to maintain aging Voyager spacecraft
NASA is facing significant technical challenges in maintaining the aging Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft, which have been traveling through space since 1977. The probes are currently billions of kilometers from Earth, with Voyager 1 approximately 25.6 billion kilometers away and Voyager 2 approximately 21.4 billion kilometers away.
Engineers are struggling with dwindling power from plutonium batteries and the risk of clogged hydrazine fuel lines. These lines are essential for operating the thrusters that orient the probes' antennas toward Earth. Maintaining the necessary heat for the fuel requires electrical power that is increasingly scarce.
Historical data from Voyager 2 remains scientifically vital. In 1989, during a flyby of Neptune's moon Triton, the probe captured images of nitrogen geysers erupting up to eight kilometers high. This discovery challenged previous scientific assumptions that such activity was impossible on the solar system's coldest known surface, which sits at roughly minus 235 degrees Celsius.
