NASA warns El Niño could trigger severe heat in Germany

NASA scientists, using several satellites, have identified early signs of a strong El Niño event that could become “a huge thing,” with warming of Pacific waters and the formation of Kelvin waves similar to the 1997 episode. The agency warned that the phenomenon may lead to unusual weather patterns worldwide, including heightened heat risks.

In Germany, meteorologists linked the developing El Niño to an ongoing heat dome that has pushed temperatures in Niedersachsen to near‑40 °C. Forecasts predict a brief cooling period from late June 27‑29, with thunderstorms expected to bring rain and lower temperatures to 25‑30 °C, followed by further drops to 19‑20 °C in the days after. The expected relief comes after a record‑breaking heat spell that has seen nighttime temperatures stay above 20 °C.

Both reports underscore that the emerging El Niño is likely to influence summer weather across Europe, intensifying heat while also setting the stage for a short‑lived cooling episode later in the month.
