NASA's Artemis II Mission Captures Dual Auroras and Begins Post‑Flight Health Studies

On 2 April 2024, the four astronauts of NASA’s Artemis II mission photographed a rare event: simultaneous auroras at both the North and South Poles. Using a Nikon D5 camera aboard the Orion spacecraft, they captured the Earth’s night side illuminated by the full “Pink Moon” and the geomagnetic activity that produced green‑red curtains of light in both hemispheres.

Artemis II, the first crewed lunar‑orbit flight in more than five decades, concluded with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean on 10 April. Following recovery, NASA started a comprehensive post‑flight research program. The crew underwent medical examinations measuring blood pressure, heart rate, vision, balance, reflexes and motor coordination. Blood and saliva samples are being analysed for immune changes, and cognitive tests assess memory and decision‑making. Additional experiments simulate lunar‑gravity conditions and manual docking procedures. The data will inform astronaut health and performance standards for upcoming Artemis III lunar landings and future missions to Mars.
