NASA's Artemis program confronts hurdles amid private lunar base push

NASA plans to return astronauts to the Moon by 2028 with the Artemis III mission, which must demonstrate critical spacecraft operations before crewed landings. The program relies on the Orion crew capsule, the Space Launch System rocket, and coordinated flights with private providers SpaceX and Blue Origin. SpaceX will test a new version of its Starship launch vehicle, while Blue Origin is developing the Blue Moon lander and its New Glenn rocket; recent engine failures and launch‑pad damage have compressed their testing timelines.

Parallel to the Artemis schedule, private companies and international space agencies are planning a permanent lunar presence.
