Nasir El-Rufai faces detention amid political shifts in Nigeria

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is currently in detention facing legal battles involving the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Department of State Services (DSS). The allegations range from financial misconduct to wiretapping.

Bashir Saidu, the former Chief of Staff to El-Rufai, has denied allegations of betraying the former governor. Saidu clarified that while he and other allies have distanced themselves from El-Rufai, it was due to a perceived lack of value for their contributions rather than abandonment. Saidu noted that he and El-Rufai jointly built the political structure that brought the former governor to power.

El-Rufai’s recent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has significant implications for the 2027 general elections. Before his detention, El-Rufai vowed to mobilize support in Northern Nigeria to unseat President Bola Tinubu. Political analysts are divided on whether his detention is a legitimate anti-corruption measure or a politically motivated attempt to blunt the ADC’s influence ahead of the elections.
