Italy launches Make Sense Campaign for head and neck cancer awareness
The Italian Association of Cervico-Cephalic Oncology (AIOCC) has launched the XIV edition of the ‘Make Sense Campaign’ to raise awareness for head and neck cancers. In Italy, approximately 9,000 new cases are diagnosed annually, making it the seventh most common cancer type in Europe. The campaign, which runs from September 21 to 26, involves over 185 public and private healthcare facilities offering specialist visits to encourage early diagnosis.
Recent data highlighted in a Teha Group policy brief emphasizes the specific challenges of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. In Italy, 63% of the disease burden affects individuals under 65, significantly higher than the 43% seen in other head and neck cancers. This demographic impact results in an estimated annual productivity loss of $57.2 million. Experts, including Giuseppe Sanguineti and Paolo Bossi, stress the need for multidisciplinary care and increased research within European populations to improve long-term survival and quality of life, noting that current treatment paradigms are often based on studies from Asian populations where the disease is more endemic.
