Natal municipal teachers maintain strike despite court order
Municipal teachers in Natal, Brazil, have voted to continue their strike despite a ruling from the Rio Grande do Norte Court of Justice (TJRN). The court order, issued by Judge Glauber Rêgo, mandated an immediate return to classrooms and established a daily fine of R$ 10,000 for non-compliance.
During an assembly held on Monday, educators decided to maintain the mobilization, citing a lack of progress in negotiations with the Natal City Hall. Representatives from the Sinte-RN union stated that the decision is not a confrontation with the judiciary, but a response to the municipal government's refusal to negotiate effectively.
The teachers' primary demands include a 4.6% salary recomposition to address what they claim are accumulated losses of approximately 60% over recent years. Other grievances include school infrastructure issues and changes to the curricular matrix.
