Natal municipal teachers strike

Overview

In August 2026, municipal teachers and early-childhood educators in Natal, Brazil, initiated an indefinite strike organized by the Sinte-RN union. The educators demanded a 4.6% salary increase to address approximately 60% in accumulated wage losses, alongside career track unification, salary parity, planning rights, and infrastructure improvements.

Initially, teachers voted to maintain their mobilization despite a ruling from the Rio Grande do Norte Court of Justice (TJRN) that mandated an immediate return to classrooms and imposed a daily fine of R$ 10,000. Union representatives stated the decision was a response to the municipal government’s refusal to negotiate effectively.

By August 24, the strike was suspended following a judicial order that increased the daily fine for the Sinte-RN union to R$ 50,000 and mandated that days not worked be deducted from employees' pay. The municipality had sought this intervention, arguing the union failed to provide a contingency plan for the 147 school units serving over 51,000 students. While the strike is suspended, Sinte-RN announced plans to appeal to the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and scheduled a protest for August 26 in front of the Palácio Felipe Camarão.
