Ilia Topuria announces medical clearance and targets UFC return

Former UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria has announced he is medically cleared to return to competition following his loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250. Topuria, who suffered broken orbital bones during the June bout, used social media to signal his comeback while making unproven allegations regarding Gaethje’s equipment. Topuria suggested that Gaethje’s gloves should be inspected in future fights to ensure nothing “weird” is added to them.

Justin Gaethje dismissed the claims as “lame excuses,” noting that Topuria’s performance was the issue rather than the equipment. The exchange has intensified discussions regarding a potential immediate rematch for the lightweight title, though other contenders like Arman Tsarukyan remain in the mix.

While Topuria has expressed readiness, his physical trainer, Jesus Gallo, indicated that a formal training camp has not yet begun. Current projections suggest a return to the Octagon as early as February 2027. Additionally, Aleksandre Topuria, Ilia’s brother, is reportedly in negotiations for a UFC return in November at UFC Qatar.
