Nathan Cofnas cleared to resume work after exposing Arday scandal

Nathan Cofnas, the American academic who exposed plagiarism and fabrication allegations involving former Cambridge professor Jason Arday, has been permitted to resume remote work at Ghent University in Belgium. His suspension was lifted following an intervention by the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium, Bill White.

Cofnas reported that his investigation into Arday revealed that a large portion of Arday’s thesis was copied and several papers were heavily plagiarized. The scandal led to Arday’s resignation from the University of Cambridge in August. Following his resignation, Arday was found dead in his home, an event Cofnas noted occurred shortly after the academic scrutiny intensified.

Cofnas stated he faced significant backlash, including death threats, after publishing his findings. Regarding his current status at Ghent University, Cofnas expressed gratitude to Rector Petra De Sutter and Ambassador White for protecting academic freedom and allowing him to complete his one-year postdoctoral appointment while a disciplinary investigation continues.
