Nationaal Ouderenfonds and Pathé launch initiative to combat elderly loneliness

New research from the Nationaal Ouderenfonds reveals that approximately 45% of elderly people in the Netherlands experience some degree of loneliness. The findings suggest that many seniors feel like a burden to society, a sentiment linked to declining physical and mental health.

To combat this issue, the Nationaal Ouderenfonds has partnered with the cinema chain Pathé for the ‘Week against Loneliness’ (September 24–30). The initiative encourages citizens to act as ‘film buddies’ by accompanying lonely seniors to the movies. Pathé is facilitating this through a dedicated webpage where volunteers can sign up to match with local seniors for a fully hosted cinema visit, including refreshments.
