Hungary selects candidates for National Asset Recovery and Protection Agency leadership
The selection process for the leadership of Hungary's new National Asset Recovery and Protection Agency (NVVH) has entered its final stages. Following an initial pool of 96 applicants, the Parliamentary Committee for Justice and Constitutional Affairs has shortlisted candidates for key positions.
Three primary candidates for the presidency have been identified: Miklós Ligeti, a legal expert and former Transparency International director; Anna Róza Unger, a political scientist and ELTE lecturer; and Dávid Jancsics, a corruption researcher. However, Jancsics has since withdrawn his candidacy, stating that the agency requires a leader with a prosecutor or investigator temperament to effectively handle the urgent task of asset recovery.
The Tisza Party has introduced an additional candidate for the presidency, Nicholas Sárvári, a dual Canadian-Hungarian citizen and managing partner at CNS Risk UK Ltd. The selection process includes personal hearings scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, with a final parliamentary vote expected on Friday to appoint the president for a six-year term.
The NVVH is designed to investigate abuses involving public assets, state and municipal property, and EU funds, with the goal of restoring public trust and preventing future corruption. The agency is expected to employ approximately 200 people and aims to begin major asset recovery cases by the end of 2026.
