Romania and Moldova report economic shifts in reserves, gold, and tourism

Economic indicators for Romania and Moldova show varied trends in August and September 2026. In Romania, the National Bank reported international reserves at 64,865 million euros as of August 31, with total reserves including gold reaching 77,627 million euros. Gold prices in Romania saw an upward trend, reaching 649.5183 lei per gram on September 4.

In the tourism sector, while the European Union recorded a record 1.321 billion overnight stays in the first half of 2026, Romania experienced a 6.7% decline in overnight stays, the second-lowest performance in the EU after Cyprus. This decline is attributed to a lower share of foreign tourists compared to the EU average.

In Moldova, the National Bank of Moldova reported fluctuating exchange rates for the Moldovan leu against the euro and US dollar. For the weekend of September 4, the euro was valued at 20.038 lei, while the US dollar stood at 17.2682 lei.
