National Bank of Romania launches Nicolae Tonitza silver coin

The National Bank of Romania is launching a new silver coin as part of the ‘Romanian Painters’ series, dedicated to the artist Nicolae Tonitza to commemorate the 140th anniversary of his birth. This release marks the first time the National Bank has issued a rectangular-shaped coin for numismatic circulation.

The silver coin features a colored obverse depicting Tonitza’s painting ‘Yellow Flowers’ (Flori galbene), which is part of the National Museum of Art of Romania’s collection. The reverse displays a portrait of the painter along with his name and lifespan (1886-1940).

Each coin has a nominal value of 10 lei, weighs 31.103 grams, and measures 43x31mm. The approved mintage is limited to 500 pieces. The coins are sold for 1,150.00 lei (including VAT) and include a presentation brochure and certificates of authenticity in Romanian, English, and French. They are available through the National Bank’s regional branches in Bucharest, Cluj, Constanța, Dolj, Iași, and Timiș.
