Bucharest Stock Exchange faces major correction as BET index drops
The Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB) experienced significant volatility, marked by a sharp correction in the BET index. On August 31, the index fell by 3.61%, resulting in a single-day loss of 20.2 billion lei in market capitalization. This decline was driven by massive sell-offs from retail investors, with over 25,000 sell orders placed in a single day. Major companies saw substantial drops, including Romgaz (-10%), Transelectrica (-8.9%), and Banca Transilvania (-5%).
While the market saw a partial recovery of approximately 1.03% on the following Tuesday, trading volumes remained significantly lower than during the initial crash. Institutional investors reportedly utilized special transaction mechanisms, such as DEAL trades, to manage large volumes without immediately impacting real-time prices.
In the currency markets, the Romanian leu has shown fluctuations against major currencies. Recent National Bank of Romania (BNR) data indicates the euro and US dollar have seen periods of appreciation against the leu, while the Swiss franc has experienced declines. Meanwhile, discussions regarding the potential sale of state-owned assets on the BVB, including companies like Hidroelectrica and Romgaz, continue to influence long-term market outlooks.
