National Children's Hospital reports death of child from Influenza A complication

A 4-year-old girl has died following a rare and severe neurological complication of Influenza A known as acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE). The patient, who was previously healthy, developed high fever and respiratory symptoms before progressing to continuous seizures, loss of consciousness, and coma.

Medical staff at the National Children's Hospital in Vietnam diagnosed the condition based on rapid brain damage progression, despite initial CT scans and ammonia levels appearing normal. Despite intensive treatments including high-dose immunosuppressants, continuous blood filtration, and neurological resuscitation, the patient succumbed to the illness two days after admission.

Doctors warn that ANE is a rare complication often linked to excessive immune responses following viral infections. The release of high concentrations of inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-6 and TNF-alpha, is believed to drive the rapid brain damage characteristic of the disease.
