Influenza A complications in Vietnam

Overview

Medical professionals at the National Children's Hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam, have issued warnings regarding the risks of Influenza A, specifically its connection to Acute Necrotizing Encephalopathy (ANE).

The warning follows the death of a previously healthy 4-year-old girl who developed severe neurological complications after contracting the virus. The patient experienced high fever and respiratory symptoms before progressing to continuous seizures and a coma. Despite intensive medical interventions, including high-dose immunosuppressants and continuous blood filtration, the rapid progression of brain damage led to her death.

Doctors describe ANE as a rare condition driven by an excessive immune response, or cytokine storm, where the release of inflammatory cytokines can damage the blood-brain barrier and lead to brain edema, necrosis, and hemorrhage. This systemic inflammatory response may also impact the liver, kidneys, and respiratory systems.
