Brazil faces climate risks as El Niño drives floods and water security concerns

Brazil is facing significant climate-related challenges, with heavy rains and the El Niño phenomenon driving extreme weather across various regions. In Rio Grande do Sul, the National Civil Defense has deployed technical teams to Pelotas and Jaguarão to assist local governments, expedite humanitarian aid, and facilitate federal resource transfers for disaster recovery.

Severe weather has caused widespread disruption in the southern state, including power outages affecting thousands, flooded roads, and emergency declarations in municipalities like Capão do Leão and São José do Norte. In response to potential increased rainfall through 2027, emergency responders from Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul have conducted joint rescue training in the Iguaçu River rapids.

Water security is also a growing concern. In Santo Antônio da Patrulha, maintenance crews have worked to restore water flow for 65% of the municipality, while in São Mateus, authorities are monitoring salt intrusion in the Cricaré River due to drought and low river flow. A study by the Climate Observatory highlights that approximately 80% of Brazilian municipalities are vulnerable to geo-hydrological disasters, including floods and landslides.
