Kokoomus proposes 9 billion euro austerity plan for Finland

The National Coalition Party (Kokoomus) has unveiled a 9 billion euro austerity plan, titled ‘Jarrua velalle’ (Brake for Debt), aimed at strengthening Finland’s public finances during the next parliamentary term. The program focuses on direct spending cuts rather than tax increases. Of the 9 billion euros in savings, 1 billion can be reallocated for strategic investments and reforms, resulting in a net fiscal improvement of 8 billion euros.

The proposed cuts are distributed across seven key areas: • 2 billion euros from pension system reforms • 2 billion euros from social and healthcare service reforms • 1.5 billion euros by curbing the growth of index-linked expenditures • 1.7 billion euros through prioritization of other expenses • 0.7 billion euros from administrative reforms • 0.6 billion euros from reducing business subsidies • 0.5 billion euros from social security reforms

Political opponents have criticized the plan. The Social Democratic Party (SDP) described the measures as an operation to dismantle the welfare state, arguing they place the burden on the sick and poor. The Left Alliance (Vasemmistoliitto) warned that the scale of the cuts could damage economic growth and lead to significant layoffs, potentially harming domestic demand and long-term fiscal sustainability.
