National Council on Problem Gambling survey reveals gap in parental discussions on gambling

A national survey conducted by The Harris Poll for the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) found that only 51% of parents and caregivers with children aged 6 to 17 have discussed gambling with them. While 40% of parents intend to have the conversation, 9% have no plans to do so.

The findings highlight growing concerns regarding the accessibility of sports betting, prediction markets, and fantasy sports apps via smartphones and broadcasts. Approximately 64% of parents with children under 18 expressed concern about their children engaging in gambling activities before reaching the legal age.

The survey also noted a disparity in concern levels between genders, with 75% of fathers reporting worry compared to 42% of mothers. To assist families, 90% of parents indicated that specific resources—such as guidance on recognizing early signs of problem gambling and tips on how to initiate the conversation—would make the discussion easier.
