National Cultural Fund Committee appoints new members

Zoltán Tarr, the Minister responsible for social relations and culture, has announced the appointment of three new members to the National Cultural Fund (NKA) Committee: actor and director Pál Mácsai, arts manager and literature therapist Anna Ott, and art historian Edit Sasvári. The committee held its first meeting following these appointments, where it decided on a budget of over four billion forints sourced from collective rights management.

The committee currently consists of eight members, including Péter Ertl, Sándor Szakály, Gábor Richly, Hajnal Tordai, and Béla Ternovszky. A ninth member is to be nominated by the Hungarian Festival Association, the Hungarian Arts Festivals Association, and Music Hungary by September 7.

Minister Tarr stated that the new appointments mark a new era of independence for the institution, aiming to move away from a system he described as lacking professionalism under the previous administration. He noted that the previous leadership had spent 95 percent of this year's budget in the three months preceding the elections.

Key objectives for the committee include restoring the role of permanent collegiums and reducing the special ministerial fund—previously 25 percent under former minister Balázs Hankó—to 5 percent starting next year. This reduction is intended to strip the fund of its direct political function, repurposing it for use in crisis situations within the cultural sector.
