Restructuring of Hungary's National Cultural Fund

Overview

Minister Zoltán Tarr has initiated a restructuring of the National Cultural Fund (NKA) in Hungary to increase professionalism and independence. In late August 2026, Tarr announced the appointment of three new committee members—Pál Mácsai, Anna Ott, and Edit Sasvári—aiming to move away from a system he described as lacking professionalism under the previous administration.

The committee established a budget of over four billion forints and set objectives to reduce the special ministerial fund from 25 percent to 5 percent to strip it of its direct political function. Following the dismissal of previous members on September 9, Tarr appointed new permanent members to various specialized collegiums, including Performing Arts and Built Heritage, to serve terms through September 2030. These measures are intended to restore public confidence and the reputation of the NKA.
